In line with the vision of the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to establish a TVET centre of excellence in every region across the country, the GTVET Director, together with his team, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to discuss prospective collaborations.

The visit, facilitated by the TCC–International Center for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET), focused on KNUST’s capacity to host the Centre of Excellence through the centre and to partner with the government toward the realization of its goal.

In a presentation delivered by the Director-General of TCC-CIMET, Prof. Francis Davis highlighted the key activities of the Centre. He further outlined areas where the government could partner with the Centre to support the growth of TVET in Ghana.

“When you come to KNUST, you often think we are only book-oriented, but that is not the case for us at TCC. We are here to practicalise whatever we do as an institution. We currently run programs such as SheTVET, where we empower female engineering students with CAD/CAM skills. We also lead STEM and TVET promotion activities during our World Engineering Day celebrations, where we visit basic schools, senior high schools, and technical schools to equip students with knowledge on the Internet of Things and other emerging technologies.

Additionally, we provide training for artisans in Suame in auto diagnostics and modern trends, while also building the capacities of community members to enhance skills development and local industry growth.

We are currently working with 43 clients that have the potential to support your TVET students under the Workplace Experience Learning (W.E.L.) you are implementing, and we believe we can collaborate with you to successfully advance this initiative,” he said.

The TCC–International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET) is a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence in engineering education in Ghana and West Africa. The Centre operates under a tripartite agreement between KNUST, UNESCO, and the Government of Ghana.

The Director-General for Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (GTVET) service in Ghana, Engr. Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, highlighted that partnering with TCC-CIMET would enhance WEL student placements and address gaps in areas like Agricultural TVET.

“WEL has become an integral part of the training regime, with each cohort participating for an entire semester. From your presentation, it is clear that you have 43 well-tested and approved organizations that can support our students. To some extent, the Ashanti Region is well covered we have 37 TVET institutions here alone. In addition, there is a significant gap in Agricultural TVET, as highlighted in a recent study. We will have further discussions on this aspect.

The Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, urged both teams to collaborate and work toward achieving their shared goals.

“Once the conversations have been held and we have listened to each other, the real work must begin. We must come together to examine the details. KNUST, which belongs to the government, is happy to commit to working with another government institution. This is a partnership between two government institutions aimed at achieving positive results for the country and beyond. With the teams ready and willing to work, I don’t see what should prevent us from ticking the boxes,” she said.

Also present at the meeting were the Registrar of KNUST, Mr. Benjamin Boampong Owusu, Dr. Kwabena Asubonteng, HOD, Indigenous Art and Technology, Dr. F. K. Nunoo, HOD, Department of Publishing Studies, Dr. Eric Opoku Osei, Director Research and Innovation, TCC-CIMET, Mr. Paul Pinaman Adade, Director of Administration TCC-CIMET, Engr.
