A Symbol of Strength and Transformation: The Meaning Behind TCC-CIMET’s Logo
When you take a closer look at the identity of TCC-CIMET, you will notice three significant elements embedded in our logo: the emblem of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the mark of UNESCO, and the Adinkra symbol Nkyinkyim.
While the presence of KNUST and UNESCO will be explored in subsequent features, today we focus on the powerful Nkyinkyim and its profound meaning within our institutional identity.
Our Origins: Where the Journey Began
The story of TCC-CIMET began in 1972, when we were known simply as the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC). In our formative years, the Centre focused on Intermittent Technology Transfer, establishing a dedicated unit that laid the groundwork for decades of innovation and impact.
Our first Director, Sir J. W. Powell, firmly believed that Ghana’s indigenous technology was worth investing in. He championed the idea that improving and refining local technologies would provide practical, sustainable solutions to the nation’s manufacturing needs. His vision placed value on local ingenuity and positioned the Centre as a catalyst for homegrown innovation.
A Landmark Achievement
In 1985, TCC-KNUST proudly won First Prize at the Ghana Industrial Technology Fair a national recognition of the Centre’s pioneering work in technology transfer, support for local industry, and innovation.
To commemorate this achievement, an exhibition was mounted at the foyer of the Great Hall at KNUST, drawing the attention of academic leaders, institutional partners, and key stakeholders. This milestone affirmed the Centre’s growing influence and commitment to advancing technological solutions rooted in local expertise.
Global Recognition
The Centre’s unwavering commitment to excellence culminated in 2021, when it received prestigious global recognition as a Category II Centre under the auspices of UNESCO for Engineering Education, through an agreement between UNESCO, the Government of Ghana, and KNUST. This recognition highlights TCC-CIMET’s role as a leading hub for technology transfer, innovation, and engineering education in Ghana and beyond.
A Legacy Reflected in Nkyinkyim
Through 53 years of existence, growth, and service, our journey reveals why Nkyinkyim is not merely decorative in our logo, it reflects who we are.
Over the years, we have transformed and evolved, embraced innovation, and trained skilled men and women who continue to make meaningful contributions to society. We have witnessed changing times and shifting governments. Yet, through every season, we have remained a steadfast beacon of hope, resilience, and excellence.
The Meaning of Nkyinkyim
Nkyinkyim is an Akan Adinkra symbol that represents dynamism, initiative, versatility, and resilience. Its twisted, winding form reflects the unpredictable path of life, a reminder that progress is rarely linear.
The wavy line, forming the main component of Nkyinkyim, depicts the meandering course of life’s journey. These twists and turns require one to be versatile and resilient in order to survive and thrive. The proverb associated with this symbol is:
“Ɔbra kwan yɛ nkyinkyimii” — Life’s road is twisted.
Growth often comes through adaptation. Strength is built through challenge. Transformation requires flexibility. These principles define the spirit of Nkyinkyim and they define us.
Our Story Now: A Legacy in Motion
Today, TCC-CIMET stands not only as an institution with a proud history but as a forward-looking centre of innovation and capacity building. Our commitment remains strong to excellence, relevance, and shaping the future through knowledge and skill development.
We continue to adapt to emerging trends, technological advancements, and the evolving needs of industry and society. We are strengthening partnerships, expanding opportunities, and positioning ourselves as a hub for transformative learning and impact.
The same resilience that carried us through 53 years continues to guide us today. The same dynamism represented by Nkyinkyim fuels our present direction. We are not standing still we are growing, reimagining, and preparing the next generation to lead.
Our Identity in Motion
In our logo, Nkyinkyim symbolizes our institutional journey, one marked by endurance, innovation, and continuous renewal. It reflects our ability to adapt without losing focus, evolve without compromising values, and stand firm while navigating change.
Nkyinkyim is more than a symbol.
It is our story.
It is our present.
It is our future in motion.
